PROJECT JUSTIFICATION:
In consideration to heightening environmental concerns, increasing trends on inter-disciplinarity and the role of community participation and local action in solving environmental issues - it is therefore very timely for the Faculty of Science to increase environmental awareness and encourage positive environmental practices amongst different sections of the faculty’s community. This interdisciplinary, localized and community-based approach is also in line with the spirit of sustainable development and its action plan, Local Agenda 21.
The INITIATE! Project, through its focus on the 3Rs of paper usage, will act as an initial project in this initiative. We decided to select the issue of paper usage as a starting-point not only because it is one of the most visible activities in the faculty with clear environmental impact, but also because it is a common issue that can be easily understood by all levels of the community at this juncture.
ACTIVITIES:
The INITIATE! Project is divided into 3 phases:
- Opening event: Launching of the project by the Dean and briefing of project implementation by the organizing committee.
- Project Implementation: A period of identifying, exploring and documenting examples of positive environmental practices in the 3Rs of paper usage in the Faculty of Science.
- Closing event: Talks, demonstrations and information dissemination to encourage the 3Rs of paper usage to the Faculty of Science community.
PARTICIPATION:
All levels of community in the Faculty of Science i.e. academics, students and support staff (including our cleaners)
